Rails to Trails
http://www.a1trails.com/rail/trailsmi.html
As the terminus of two rails-to-trails Mackinaw’s new trailhead is destined to get a lot of use. The trailhead will feature parking, bathrooms, and a picnic area. The trailhead is expected to be completed in summer 2011. Both trails have been paved inside the village limits and offer fantastic walks, runs, and rides through our beautiful woods. Take the Mackinaw to Petoskey route for 1 mile and arrive at the Wind Turbine Park where there are displays and a picnic area.

North Country Trail
http://www.northcountrytrail.org/hrb/Home.html
This national trail, from New York state to North Dakota runs right through Mackinaw City. While it is a fantastic hike across the country, smaller segments make terrific day hikes. The local chapters often have people who will help spot your car so plan ahead and contact the web sites. The trail is great for hiking and running but because of sensitive sand dunes the trail is not open to bicycling in this region.
